Last week the NY Times Bits blog reported on a study, conducted by web usability expert Jakob Nielsen, that shows how generic and/or bad photography is ignored by people visiting websites.
My guess is that this photo from the Yale School of Management actually shows real students; stock photos would rarely be this poorly cropped or show models slouching (as with the guy in the blue shirt).
Still, on this particular page, the photo is pure filler. Users are here to understand the school’s application process, not to judge the degree of student slouch.
Most likely, the dean or other manager asked designers to “jazz up” the page so the university would look more exciting and thus attract more applications. But on the Web, jazzed-up = ignored.
Moral of the story; hire a good a photographer and use photography well.
Super interesting and highly relevant to what I do every day.

An artist’s depiction
of the InternetThat question went out of common conversation, especially common business conversation, at least thirteen years ago. Everyone needs a website, right? The URL has achieved the status of the name, the street address and the phone number. If you don’t have…
Wise words, young buck.

Thoughtful article from Jason Santa Maria, one of the greatest minds in the industry. I’ve felt the same way for a long time, but he does a wonderful job of analyzing the current offerings and digging into what we really need. If you’re in the web design field, this is a must read.

This is interesting in that folks who will spend $500 - $1000 for an iPad are probably some of the same folks who will buy some of these brands. This doesn’t look good for these so-called luxury brands, who supposedly obsess over the tiniest details.
That aside, these sites are great examples of Flash used poorly. It should be used as a layer, not a means to an end. If you’re doing it like these poor saps, you’re doing it wrong.
